A key and checklist to the Neotropical forensically important "Little House Flies" (Diptera: Fanniidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Grisales,Diana; Lecheta,Melise C.; Aballay,Fernando H.; Carvalho,Claudio J.B. de.
ABSTRACT Fanniidae (Insecta: Diptera) is a relatively small family (ca. 350 spp.) with five genera, of which Fannia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 and Euryomma Stein, 1899 have Neotropical distributions. Some of these species are almost always found in forensic studies. Forensically relevant species have been neglected, despite recent forensic studies that suggest their importance for estimating post-mortem interval (PMI). Thus, current and updated keys to identify adults or larvae on carcasses are unavailable for the most important species. While immature stages are important in estimating PMI, evidence suggests that adults (Fanniidae as well as other families) may also be useful for this purpose. Here we provide a key to males of the species of Fanniidae (found...

Throughout the world, infections with the Babesia and Theileria parasites often result in economically significant clinical disease in cattle. We conducted a longitudinal survey of Babesia and Theileria infections in cattle from the Polonnaruwa (n?=?75; dry zone) and Nuwara Eliya (n?=?161; wet zone) districts of Sri Lanka. DNA from blood samples collected in June, September, and December 2014 and March 2015 was screened for Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, Theileria annulata and Theileria orientalis using specific polymerase chain reactions (PCRs). Additionally, serum samples collected from the animals were screened using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) to detect B. bovis- and B. bigemina-specific antibodies. All of the animals surveyed in...

A matter of ephemerality: the study of Kel Tadrart Tuareg (southwest Libya) campsites via quantitative spatial analysis Ecology and Society
Biagetti, Stefano; CaSEs - Complexity and Socio-Ecological Dynamics group; Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Department of Humanities; School of Geography, Archaeology, and Environmental Studies, University of the Witwatersrand; stefano.biagetti@upf.edu; Crema, Enrico R.; CaSEs - Complexity and Socio-Ecological Dynamics group; Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Department of Humanities; UCL Institute of Archaeology; enrico.crema@upf.edu.
We examined the settlement structure from the Kel Tadrart Tuareg, a small pastoral society from southwest Libya. Our objective was to apply spatial analysis to establish the statistical significance of specific patterns in the settlement layout. In particular, we examined whether there is a separation between domestic and livestock spaces, and whether particular residential features dedicated to guests are spatially isolated. We used both established statistical techniques and newly developed bespoke analyses to test our hypotheses, and then discuss the results in the light of possible applications to other case studies.

A metadata model for cross-domain marine data management, the SeaDataNet/Geo-Seas experience ArchiMer
Diviacco, P.; Casas Munoz, R.; Sorribas, J.; Loubrieu, Thomas.
Data management in the marine sciences faces the complex issue of addressing contrasting cognitive models across scientific domains, meaning the various representations that different communities build for overlapping areas of interest. Each of these communities constructs an identity on a specific and personal set of inherited backgrounds, practices, and tacit knowledge, which are mirrored in how they understand the targets of their studies. From a practical point of view, this can result in mis-linking observations and usage. This paper reports on the work done within the EU FP7 SeaDataNet project to tackle such problems through an integrated discovery and data access paradigm. It is based on a flexible metadata model that allows researchers to link...

We present a new method for ecologically sustainable land use planning within multiple land use schemes. Our aims were (1) to develop a method that can be used to locate important areas based on their ecological values; (2) to evaluate the quality, quantity, availability, and usability of existing ecological data sets; and (3) to demonstrate the use of the method in Eastern Finland, where there are requirements for the simultaneous development of nature conservation, tourism, and recreation. We compiled all available ecological data sets from the study area, complemented the missing data using habitat suitability modeling, calculated the total ecological score (TES) for each 1 ha grid cell in the study area, and finally, demonstrated the use of TES in...

A method for controlled target strength measurements of pelagic fish, with application to European anchovy ( Engraulis encrasicolus ) ArchiMer
Doray, Mathieu; Berger, Laurent; Le Bouffant, Naig; Coail, Jean-yves; Vacherot, Jean-philippe; De La Bernardie, Xavier; Moriniere, Pierre; Lys, Elisabeth; Schwab, Romain; Petitgas, Pierre.
Measuring fish target strength (TS) in the wild is challenging because: (i) TS varies versus physical (orientation relative to the incident sound wave, size, and depth) and physiological fish attributes (maturity and condition), (ii) the target species and its aforementioned attributes are difficult to assess in near real time, and (iii) in the case of packed fish schools, accepted echoes may originate from multiple unresolved targets. We propose a method for controlled TS measurements of densely packed small pelagic fish during daytime, based on the joint use of a Remotely Operated Towed Vehicle, “EROC”, with a pelagic trawl fitted with a codend opening system, “ENROL”. EROC, equipped with a 70-kHz split-beam echosounder (Simrad EK60) and a low-light...

A methodology for definition of rural spaces: an implementation in Brazil Ciência Rural
Braga,Gustavo Bastos; Remoaldo,Paula Cristina; Fiúza,Ana Louise de Carvalho.
ABSTRACT: Rural spaces definitions are differentiated in several countries. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has standardized a rural definition by regional typology. The OECD regional typology set areas as Predominantly Urban, Intermediate, or Predominantly Rural. This paper analyses the application of OECD regional typology in Brazilian territory. The research used the OECD methodology, with support of GIS software, to define the rural areas in Brazil. The mostly segmented data from Brazilian Census of 2010 are used in contrast to others studies. The paper concludes that Brazil is more urban than official estimates and OECD reports. According to paper results, 87.48% of Brazilian population is urban and only one...

A model based on data from echosounder buoys to estimate biomass of fish species associated with fish aggregating devices ArchiMer
Lopezi, Jon; Moreno, Gala; Boyra, Guillermo; Dagorn, Laurent.
Most of the drifting fish aggregating devices (DFADs) used in industrial tropical tuna purse seine fisheries are equipped with satellite linked echosounder buoys, which provide fishing crews with remote, accurate geolocation information and rough estimates of FAD-associated tuna biomass. One of the most common brands of echosounder buoys (SATLINK, Madrid, Spain) is currently calibrated for the target strength of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) and provides biomass data on. that species. Using that brand of echosounder buoy, we developed a new behavior-based approach to provide relative biomass estimates and a remote target classification of fish aggregations at FADs. The model is based on current knowledge of the vertical distribution of the main fish...

A modeling study of processes controlling the Bay of Bengal sea surface salinity interannual variability ArchiMer
Akhil, V. P.; Lengaigne, M.; Vialard, J.; Durand, F.; Keerthi, M. G.; Chaitanya, A. V. S.; Papa, F.; Gopalakrishna, V. V.; De Boyer Montegut, Clement.
Recent observational studies provided preliminary insights on the interannual variability of Bay of Bengal (BoB) Sea Surface Salinity (SSS), but are limited by the poor data coverage. Here, we describe the BoB interannual SSS variability and its driving processes from a regional eddy-permitting ocean general circulation model forced by interannually varying air-sea fluxes and altimeter-derived discharges of major rivers over the past two decades. Simulated interannual SSS variations compare favorably with both in situ and satellite data and are largest in boreal fall in three regions: the northern BoB, the coastal region off east India, and the Andaman Sea. In the northern BoB, these variations are independent from those in other regions and mostly driven...

A Morphological Study of the Dorsum Sellae in Human Skull International Journal of Morphology
Haider,Syed Javed; Rezigalla,Assad Ali; Abdalla,Asim Mohammed.
Anatomical variations in the shape and dimension of the dorsum sellae and posterior clinoid process are common. Most textbooks describe its shape as a median rectangular plate, a square plate, or a transverse ledge on a slope behind the sella turcica (hypophyseal fossa). This work aims to study the dorsum sellae of human skull. One hundred and twenty five dried adult human skulls, irrespective of age, were used for the study. Detailed features of the dorsum sellae were noted and classified into five types: crest like, thin plate, frail quadrilateral plate, heavy square plate, thick elongated plate. Fusion of the posterior and middle clinoid processes in one (unilateral) and all the clinoid processes (anterior, middle, and posterior) in three skulls...

The Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) is a synthesis of quality-controlled fCO(2) (fugacity of carbon dioxide) values for the global surface oceans and coastal seas with regular updates. Version 3 of SOCAT has 14.7 million fCO(2) values from 3646 data sets covering the years 1957 to 2014. This latest version has an additional 4.6 million fCO(2) values relative to version 2 and extends the record from 2011 to 2014. Version 3 also significantly increases the data availability for 2005 to 2013. SOCAT has an average of approximately 1.2 million surface water fCO(2) values per year for the years 2006 to 2012. Quality and documentation of the data has improved. A new feature is the data set quality control (QC) flag of E for data from alternative sensors and...

A multi-model assessment of the impact of currents, waves and wind in modelling surface drifters and oil spill ArchiMer
De Dominicis, M.; Bruciaferri, D.; Gerin, R.; Pinardi, N.; Poulain, P. M.; Garreau, Pierre; Zodiatis, G.; Perivoliotis, L.; Fazioli, L.; Sorgente, R.; Manganiello, C..
Validation of oil spill forecasting systems suffers from a lack of data due to the scarcity of oil slick in-situ and satellite observations. Drifters (surface drifting buoys) are often considered as proxy for oil spill to overcome this problem. However, they can have different designs and consequently behave in a different way at sea, making it not straightforward to use them for oil spill model validation purposes and to account for surface currents, waves and wind when modelling them. Stemming from the need to validate the MEDESS4MS (Mediterranean Decision Support System for Marine Safety) multi-model oil spill prediction system, which allows access to several ocean, wave and meteorological operational model forecasts, an exercise at sea was carried out...

A multi-proxy stalagmite record from northwestern Namibia of regional drying with increasing global-scale warmth over the last 47 kyr: The interplay of a globally shifting ITCZ with regional currents, winds, and rainfall ArchiMer
Railsback, L. Bruce; Brook, George A.; Liang, Fuyuan; Marais, Eugene; Cheng, Hai; Edwards, R. Lawrence.
Stalagmite Orum-1 from a cave near Orumana in northwestern Namibia provides a multi-proxy record of regional drying with increasing global-scale warmth over the last 47 kyr, in a region with few long well-dated location specific paleoclimate records. Data from Stalagmite Orum-1 include carbon and oxygen stable isotope ratios, proportions of aragonite and calcite, pronouncedly differing petrographic fabrics, positions of layer-bounding surfaces, variation in layer-specific width, and changes in layer thickness, all of which combine to support change from wetter to drier conditions. Combined with fourteen U-Th ages, they suggest that climate was wetter in northwestern Namibia during globally cold MIS 3 than it is today, and with more grass than is present...
